Aeration
The Georgia clay in our area becomes compacted and very hard during the year choking the roots of the turf and stunting healthy growth. In order to alleviate this issue, core aeration is done on Fescue turf (a very delicate cultivar) in early spring and early fall. Bermuda turf has core aeration once per year at the beginning of the growing season. Core aeration removes a one inch diameter plug of soil up to three inches deep. This will help oxygenate the root of the turf and open up the soil so nutrients and moisture can enter.

Over Seeding
It is important to over seed Fescue turf in the early fall. Temperatures are cool and with adequate moisture new grass can be established and develop a root system for more growth and maturation of the turf during the spring and early summer. To prepare for over seeding, we will cut your turf to a scalped length, dethatch it to remove dead grass and expose the soil, and cover large bare areas with wheat straw to hold the seed in place while it germinates. When we over seed we will always apply a starter fertilizer and a special concentrated lime in pelletized form. Watering lightly once a day, in the morning preferably, for two weeks will allow the seed to germinate. Occasional watering may continue to be necessary to maintain moisture on the new grass.
Bermuda and the other turfs are not typically over seeded as they spread through stolon and rezones. If bare areas develop on the other turf usually it will be necessary to patch with sod, although small areas may fill in during the growing season.
